Bansko International Jazz Festival
Every August in the main square of Bansko an international jazz festival called "the music of the free people" takes place.
The 2007 festival opened with the Big Band of Bulgarian National Radio, Dutch singer Denise Jannah and closed with Hungary's Djabe and home-grown Kalin Veliov Project. In between there were artists from the US, Spain, Italy and Holland.
The event was originally inspired by Dr Emil Iliev's idea to transform this little town into a centre of significant cultural importance. Since the first festival in 1997, the number of participants and quality of performances has been steadily increasing.
